Concrete patio installation in Hoboken New Jersey backyard

Patios & Walkways

Concrete patios and walkways are the most practical outdoor surface for New Jersey's climate. They require minimal maintenance, hold up to outdoor furniture and planters without damage, drain well when formed with the right slope, and last decades when installed with proper base preparation. We pour residential patios and walkways across Hoboken, Jersey City, Weehawken, and the rest of Hudson County — plain broom finish, exposed aggregate, tinted, or stamped, depending on the look you want.

What Patio and Walkway Installation Involves

Installation follows the same process for both: we excavate to the required depth, compact the base material, set forms, pour to 4 inches thick (minimum for patios; 3.5 inches minimum for walkways), finish to specification, and cut control joints at the correct intervals to manage shrinkage cracking. Most patio and walkway jobs are complete in one day. Foot traffic is safe after 48 hours; furniture and planters after 7 days. Stamped work adds time for pattern pressing and coloring before the slab sets. All work is completed by our own crew — no subcontracting.

Signs You May Need This Service

  • You want an outdoor living area and prefer poured concrete over pavers or stone
  • Your existing patio has heaved, sunk, or developed drainage problems sending water toward the house
  • A sidewalk or walkway has been flagged by the city for repair or replacement
  • You are adding a path from a driveway or parking area to a door
  • You need a surface around an outbuilding, garden shed, or detached garage

What Affects the Cost

  • Square footage and required slab thickness
  • Finish type — broom is the most economical, stamped and exposed aggregate cost more
  • Excavation depth and base preparation needed for the existing soil
  • Drainage corrections if the existing grade directs water toward a structure
  • Site access — narrow gates or tight side yards add labor time
  • Steps, borders, or other features that are part of the project

When Not to Call Us

If you want a paver or natural stone patio, that is not work we do — we pour concrete. Stamped concrete can replicate the look of stone or brick, but it is a poured slab with a pattern pressed in, not actual masonry. If the material matters to you more than the appearance, we are not the right contractor.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a concrete patio last in New Jersey?
A properly installed concrete patio with adequate base preparation lasts 25 to 30 years or more in New Jersey's climate. The main variables are base compaction and control joint placement — without both, even good concrete cracks within a few freeze-thaw cycles.
Can you pour a patio right up against the house foundation?
No — we always leave an expansion gap between the patio slab and any structure. This allows for seasonal movement without the slab cracking against the foundation. The gap is filled with backer rod and a flexible sealant.
Do I need a permit for a concrete patio in Hoboken?
Most patio projects below a certain square footage threshold do not require a permit in Hoboken if the slab is not attached to the structure. We verify with the city before starting any job in Hoboken proper and pull permits where required.
Can you pour a concrete patio in sections or does it need to be done all at once?
Residential patios are typically poured in one continuous pour if the area allows. Very large patios may be staged with intentional construction joints. We account for this in the form layout and joint placement before the pour begins — it does not affect durability.
